Best Rental Car, Worst Rental Car?

I generally rent three or four cars a year for trips to DC to see friends and family, or less often for jaunts out to Montauk or deepest darkest New Jersey. In a comment elsewhere I judged a Volvo V70 to be the best - great ride and extremely comfortable seats. I also rented an 850 wagon back in the 90s that I really liked. The worst was a Dodge Avenger (all they had) - shit build quality and a bone-jarring ride.

You?

Sebring. Worst throttle control ever.

In the 90s, Enterprise had a few in the fleet. In 2010 (or so) Zipcar had one - at least that’s where I recall getting it.

I think it also depends where you’re located. In Florida the best rental car might be a Mustang convertible. Out west it might be a 4x4 to go off roading.

This car, rented in Sanibel Island, was a lot of fun but had horrid build quality:

Had a Mustang convertible rental just before I got out of law school. It was cold out, but I put the top down and the heat on full and just drove it.

Ha. My Sebring rental was on Maui. Something about an island I guess.

It doesn't matter if it is a Sebring or a half million dollar Rolls. Convertibles have a magic about them that can't be beat.

My only rental car experience was the several week period where we had a different rental car every week until my dads car was finally fixed, and I was too young to drive, but I can give my passengers opinion. The 2009 Impala was the most comfortable and rode the best, but wasn’t my dads favourite. The Matrix was his favourite, he had the least complaints about it. It was also by far the best put together and thought out. The worst was the PT Cruiser, for all the usual reasons PT Cruisers are the worst. Runner up to the worst was the Yaris. My dad still says it's the worst modern car he's driven on the highway. Having driven two generations of Yaris, I completely agree.

Worst: the one rental I’ve driven.

2007 (?) Chevrolet Corsa sedan in 2014, like the one in the photo but way more grimy.

It was THE CHEAPEST rental possible, and it was ok for its original purpose: one airport run to pick up my sister and her boyfriend, on a Sunday.

Buuuuut as we had it for the weekend I thought it would be cool to travel to Punta del Este from Montevideo, about 130 km on the previous Saturday noon, to watch the first ever e-prix over here. The event itself turned to be crap, but the car itself provided all the fun the former lacked...

It was totally gutless, my friend and I agreed that there was something very wrong with the engine as it produced very little torque and acceleration was abysmal, no weird sounds, it was just a total dog. On top of that both clutch and gearbox were on the same train, the clutch was super mushy and long as hell for a car with so little power and the gearbox was all over the place.

So I ended up stepping on it after every stop, all was good until we hit the road and started going faster... because between 80 and 90 Km/h it would develop some MEAN wobbling that made us fear for our lives. IDK what it was but we decided that going faster was the safest choice (it was way better composed between 95 and 120 km/h). Problem was it wasn’t a speed machine, so from time to time we would get behind some slower car and it would get very interesting, trying to preview when/were would it be a good passing spot while trying not to get under 90 Km/h.

All was good in the end and my mum drove it for a while on the next day. We agreed to never rent from that place ever again.

We almost never rent cars, so when we do they’re nice.

In my lifetime we’ve rented 2 cars that I can remember.

Toyota Avalon (Best)

Ford Escape (Least best, but still good)

That thing is foul.

And I recall Car and Driver reviewing a small hatchback and saying the engine was only good for turning gasoline into noise.

I sometimes want to rent a high-end car, but we’re buying an apartment (if we ever fucking find one) so that’s not on the table right now. I’d like to try the new M5, a SMG SL Mercedes or an Aston. There are some high end cars on Relay Rides, and sometimes I’m sorely tempted.

I don’t travel very often because my work schedule is so demanding but when I do I typically just get something from the Dream Cars at Hertz: https://goo.gl/zl057r

I always get a car that is very similar to what I drive everyday and I can enjoy my time off a lot more easily in something I am used to than a Nissan Sentra or similar.

I wound up with the Uplander because flying into Daytona Beach on the same weekend as the Daytona 500 doesn’t seem like bad idea until you actually do it.

We have a Hertz walking distance from here. And I like how they that 911 has a V6. So few people know all the nonsense we do.
